The tribes of Kokingone- Koé-Touho mission–Former Touho

In 1853, the father Forest and the reverend-father Vigouroux, two missionaries, approached this part of the island and built a mission there. The church was built in 1889 in the center of the tribe. The settlement of the mission involved the concentration of the Kanak population. Each tribe has a small Chief and a President of Council. The tribe is managed by the Council of Olders. Administratively, the president decides from any project with the small chief and then with the big chief.

The population, approximately 300 people, are made up of 16 families. There is a catholic school from 70 to 80 children from nursery to primary school.

The council of the Clans organizes village fairs and finances equipment: pots, crockery, construction. Animations make it possible to gather families and youth around a refreshment bar, of a bingo, skewers or meetings sporting and friendly.

Families live from artisanal fishing (shells, stoups and fish). A family specialized itself in the truck farming, culture of salad and provides the food stores of Poindimié, Touho and Hienghène.

OGAF makes it possible to mechanize the truck farming and the environment like the artificial mangrove on the beach of Touho, the taro, the yam or the manioc. There is plenty of Fruits (mangos, tangerines, coconut, letchi, pineapple, bananas).

You can admire few sights, like the large church built between 1885 and 1889, which is classified "Historic building", the 3 column-like pines which commemorate the arrival of the Gospel (mass 2 fois/mois as of 8H), or the communal cemetery.

The presbytery is also classified historic building (3rd building of the territory), and the concrete cross offers a beautiful sight dominating the mission and the village of Touho.

After the collar, you cabn see the bay of Poindia. The first road on the right goes to a small nostalgic place, at Gastaldi: the store of food is inside cocoteraies and dwellings. In the court, sleeps the blue van, travelling store of past which does not furrow any more since Gastaldi father died.

Lodging a small happiness of relaxation, with the mouth of the river, where is located the camp-site well arranged of Poindia which enables you to fish or walk around.

The Northern Province and more particularly the service of the DEFIJ, recently created an establishment to ensure the eductaion. Place known as: AMOA Towards the direction of the Former-Touho. "By Elyse and Victor" accomodates you in his camp-site very close to the fine sand beach.
