The commune of Touho is located on the East coast, at 14 km from Poindimié, 30 km from Hienghène and 350 km in the North-East from Noumea the capital of New Caledonia.
Biodiversity of Touho, geographical aspect
At the discovery of the chain, the Koné-Tiwaka transversal road connects the two coasts. You can admire on 80 km, its natural assets. Pass through the chain and the largest wood of Pinus of the country, more than 3000 hectares. This road of relaxation and discovering which makes it possible to enjoy the beauty of the landscapes of the collar of Tango. The oasis of farés "Aoué Anga" enables you to make a pause and picnic or carry on towards the most beautiful places: tribes of mountain and valleys, in order to meet the inhabitants of Nechaot or Bopope. A little further, the surface of the Large Elbow deserves a glance. You leave the town of Koné to enter that of Touho (28 300 hectares): Pombei and Kokingone are the first two tribes hung on montains with a narrow strip of land, landscape of river in exceptional sites. The falls of Pombei and its rocks of astonishing forms make it possible to admire or to bathe in clear, limpid water... we are on the East coast. You leave the bridge for Poindimié on the right. On left, we are at the entry of the town of Touho. Close to the mouth, you will found an accomodating place and people here make a large effort to provide a natural tourism.
Economic resources
Tourism has been developed in the tribes: the reception at the inhabitant, the camp-sites, the lodgings, the restaurants.
Activities: stroll pedestrian, nautical, on the rivers in the dugouts.
The lagoon on the east cost: The lagoon is a very rich place to live. It is a place of fishing and leisure. You can admire at the edge of water, more than one thousand of multicoloured fish species and 350 coral species. People fond of diving, or any technique of fishing will find thousand pleasures in turquoise and hot water there. The visitors will be able to play Robinsons on the small islands, by blows of fishing, and meetings of bronzing.
Artisanal fishing: small boats, fish with the line in the lagoon, very close to the small islands. Kanak people launch the sparrowhawk, close to the mouth, on the platiers, or fish with the line on rafts. The fishing and marina is located at the center of the village. A nautical base accomodates 17 pleasure or fishing boats. It is the starting point of the exits towards the reefs and on the small islands. With Hienghène and Poindimié, Touho supplements the possibilities of damping on the East Cost.
Mangrove
The mangrove is a tropical arborescent vegetable formation: Mangrove grows up on salted, muddy, argillaceous grounds. It extends on many kilometers, along the littoral which borders the town. It is one of the richest ecosystems of the world, the starting point of many food chains.
Ecological and economic part
- Source of food for the alive beings of the lagoon.
- Fertilization of coastal water of the lagoon.
- Protection of fauna (eggs and young specimen).
- Filtering of water charged: anti-erosion and anti-pollution of the lagoon, it supports the building of the shore.
- It allows the degradation of the organic material.
Agriculture
The tribes live from market-gardening products: taros, yams, sweet potatos, coffee-trees, mangos, lawyers, oranges, tangerines, bananas and pineapple and of hunting: wild stags, notous, pigs.
Municipal animations
Each year, the town organizes the agricultural and artisanal festival, invites all the tourists and calédonians to discover the food and artisanal products of the 11 tribes.
